Novel Creation Process: Writing Phase
By Cody Leet
Time to get down to business and put pen to paper. or fingers to keyboard.
▢ Write first draft
|
The first draft is the "get your ideas down" stage. The key is to write. Keep the ideas flowing and don't get hung up on grammar and consistency.
|
▢ Write second draft
|
The second draft is where you switch roles to editor. Read each chapter and fix all the grammar you can, make it flow smoother, remove duplicate word use, remove adverbs, and all the other writing best practices. At this point, you are preparing the manuscript for an actual editor.
I recommend two tools for grammar and sentence structure review. Both have free versions and premium versions that add more features. 1) Hemingway 2) Grammarly Basically in this stage your are making the prose as clean as possible, and getting it ready for your copy editor to give it a final pass. The less wrong with it, the faster and cheaper that process will be. |
