Novel Creation Process

By Cody Leet

Writing and publish a Novel is hard! Way harder than I was expecting, and I was expecting it to be hard. The good news is all the information needed to do it is out there, scattered about the interwebs. The following pages are my attempt to consolidate all this information and provide links to the important stuff. I built this for myself, because my memory is not so good these days. Since it's so extensive, it's broken up into individual phases. Hope you find it helpful.

By the way, the world is not standing still. If you notice something is out of date or no longer applies, please let me know so I can fix it. That will help us all! Cody Leet.

Idea Phase

You have a great idea for a Novel? Write it down! This is where you gather all your ideas before you start to write.

Plotting Phase

Are you a plotster or a pantster? What does that even mean? Find out here, and flesh out the novel.

Branding Phase

Now that you are on your way, you are a novelist. Start building awareness by creating a personal brand. That way, your friends can follow your progress and keep you motivated.

Writing Phase

Finally, you get to start writing. Here are some tips to get it done cleanly.

Editing Phase

Never publish your first draft! As good as you think it is, it's crap. Do another pass, and you will be amazed at how much you change.

 Become a Publisher (optional)

You want to self-publish right? If so, this section is for you. These are the steps to start a publishing company. It's not as hard as it sounds.

 Preparation Phase

So your novel is edited. Get it out there! Not so fast.

 Publishing Phase

Finally! Here is what you do to get your novel out to the world. Feel the butterflies.

 Pre-Launch Phase

Don't rush into anything. It's best to plan. Pick and date, and perform these items leading up to it so things go smoothly.

 Launch Phase

Launch day is finally here. You are naked and exposed, but nobody is looking. The first 30 days are critical to gaining exposure. Here is one of many strategies to do so.

 Marketing Phase

The launch is over. Sales are good. How do you keep that momentum going. Unfortunately it never ends. Here are ideas for further ways to gain exposure and keep your book in the limelight.
